Textual Analysis - Ecstasy

Title: “Ecstasy”
Bate of the release: 2011 (USA)
Name of the director: Lux
The genre: drama. Sub genre: thriller
Part One: Narrative structure
Todorov came up with an equilibrium model for narrative. He suggested that most stories follow the equilibrium model with equilibrium, distribution and a new equilibrium. Most of the films go along with this convention; so does “Ecstasy”. The equilibrium in this film is the children running around with their mum, and their mum being at work in the hospital, young people partying and taking drugs. The distribution comes in when the main characters take ecstasy and their bodies react to it in an uncertain way. The new equilibrium in this film is when the main character is standing at the cliff talking to her mother.

Levi-Strauss came with a theory for binary oppositions where he suggested that the meanings are created from the oppositions. “Ecstasy” contains a lot of binary oppositions. The first binary opposition is dark and bright. We see two young girls running around a dark forest wearing bright colours. This binary opposition suggests to us that while they are still young they are innocent and are not aware of what is going on in the dark world around them.
The next very important binary opposition that we come across is the fact that the film has two different views on the situation. One is of the
average young person's view which considers drinking and taking drugs as normal, and the other one is the Christian Church view
on this which sees those things as unacceptable. This contributes to the social drama
genre as there are always more than just one side to judge a particular behaviour. Another very i
mportant binary opposition in this film is the opposition of life and death. In this film a young girl gets pregnant, as she's brought up the Christian family it would be unacceptable for her to have a baby while she is still in high school, this girl later on commits a suicide. This suggests that through a mistake of one person; two lives can be taken away, often innocent lives like the unborn child who didn't even get a chance to live in this world but already died.

On the other hand the
way in which young people speak towards each other does not vary from the rest of community. They speak in a non-slang posh English. This is going against the genre conventions because we would expect to find people who waste their lives on drugs speak in slang or improper English. The film is shown in a chronological order however, at the beginning there is a large gap in time. The film starts off with two eight year olds running around the forest and when we see them next they are already aged around 16-19.
The narrative of this film is omniscient as we are aware of everything that is going on in the film, at one point we know even more than some of the characters in the film. The narrative is also a close type of narrative as by the end of the film we know that the girl jumped off the cliff, thus there is a great sense of conclusion.

Part Two: Genre codes and conventions and representation

The genre conventions of social realism drama are very simple. The plot is usually serious and genuine. It also represents realistic characters, locations, realistic life situations in which the characters would be involved. Social realism drama doesn’t usually focus on special effects, humour or action due to representing reality. The music used in drama films is slow and dramatic; it’s rare for the music to be up-beat unless there’s an action which is rare.

The characters in this film are particularly typical of the genre through their behaviour. A social drama film would want to portray young peoples behaviour in as realistic manner as possible, and due to the times that we live in the way in which the characters are represe
nted are very true. The characters act in an aggressive manner towards their peers as well as people younger than them. They are also very disrespectful and ignorant towards their parents and teachers. They also tend to go out a lot with their friends or live somewhere else sharing a flat with their peers. They go clubbing although they are allowed there also under age children who attend the club and also drink and take drugs. There is also a lot of sex scenes involved in this film. All those features of behaviour contribute to certain representation of young people within
their community. Although there is one character who is nothing like the other characters mentioned above. He is very focused on his studies and his Christian beliefs. He tends to do revision or go Bible studies when others are partying. This is to show that in real life not all young people have bad habits. On the other hand the way in which young people speak towards each other does not vary from the rest of community. They speak in Standard English. This goes along with the genre conventions of a social realism drama film, as in modern times the drug use is not necessarily associated with lower social classes as might be thought at first. Drug problems are common in middle/high class people where there’s a lot of pressure on being seen well as a social figure
Their body language and facial expressions are typical of the genre conventions. The characters tend to move around in slowed movements, because they are most of the times in a state of alter conscious their movements are more careful and precise although they also experience loss of balance at some points.
Also their facial expressions are true to the genre conventions, we would expect in this type of genre for people to look confused, anxious, ashamed, guilty and suspicious. This is also all due to the alter conscious.
The costumes of the characters also are typical of the genre as we would associate people of the lower social class not wearing Gucci or LV. They are wearing revealing clothes. Usually this is a short skirt, long socks and a top to go with that if they go to high school. Also girls are found to wear clothes that expose their parts of the body. Their hair is usually messy and they wear heavy make up which then gets smudgy.

All those parts of genre conventions are representing a certain age group. This age group are young people aged between 16 to 21.

The storyline of this film is very typical of the social drama genre as we are introduced to characters who perform anti-social behaviours like under age drinking and taking drugs. We also have a single mother who works all the time. And to contradict with that we have a very religious person who ends up trying to help the characters with issues. This is typical of the genre as these are the type of things we would usually see in social drama films.

The film “Ecstasy” contains a very small amount of non-diegetic sound. This is because this film is meant to represent every day life where we don't hear non-diegetic sounds coming out of nowhere. The only significant type of non-diegetic in this film is at the beginning where we hear background piano music. This type of music is calm and relaxed but its also the type of music that makes us as audience feel insecure about the peace. There is a lot of diegetic sounds in the film like dialogue, loud music in the clubs and cars passing by on the road. However the last two at some times are considered as diegetic- off screen music because we do not always see where the music is coming from or we don't see the card although we can hear them.
Also a part of cinematography used in this film is very typical of the genre. In most of the films the movement of the camera would be on a fixed position. However when it comes to social drama the movement is usually hand held. This is to make the film look realistic and make the audience involved in with the story line. The film also contains a large amount of close ups to show the person's facial expressions. This is also typical of the genre convention because the audience needs to see how the characters express their emotions.
The film however does not contain a various editing techniques. This is because showing "real life" we do not see fancy editing on every day life. However there are a few techniques that are associated with social drama, those are montage and straight cuts. Straight cuts give the film it's sense of realism. Montage is usually used when we have a point of view shot of from the perspective of a character under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is to show their confusion of real world around them.
The elements of mise-en-scene in this film are also typical of the genre. For example the locations which are mostly clubs and university lecture rooms and campuses, this is realistic because that is where most young people spend their time.

The props used in this film are most representative of the genre of this film as they are mostly are drugs, cigarettes and alcohol. These are the types of props that would be used in a social drama film where the aim is to show the negative stereotypes.

Textual Analysis - Sabrina Danquah

The title of the film that I have chosen to analyse is called ‘Precious’ and it was released in 2009. Lee Daniels was the director and both Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry produced. The film was based on a novel called ‘Push’ by Sapphire which provided the genre of drama. Precious tells the story of an illiterate 16 year old girl growing up in the ghetto of Harlem set in 1987 who’s forced to deal with mental and physical abuse from both of her parents.

According to a theorist named Todorov, every film follows the same structure which he named as ‘the equilibrium model.’ This consists of three main features which are the equilibrium, the disruption and the new equilibrium. Precious is no exception to this rule as the equilibrium occurs in the first scene where she is at school in her favourite lesson and is followed by the disruption which takes place when she is called into the principal’s office and suspended. Lastly the new equilibrium occurs when Precious is reunited with her children.

An anthropologist named Levi-Straus discovered the term ‘binary oppositions’ which refers to opposite concepts being shown alongside each other for example light and dark and hot or cold. This was a concept regularly used during Precious as she often daydreamed of a life opposite to her own where she would wear prom dresses but in reality wore baggy tops and jeans.

The lead character (Precious) who was played by Gabourey Sidibe lived a life of upset which is typical of the social drama genre. Conventions of this genre include: the use of unknown actors as this can make a film look more realistic, lower/working social class because stereotypically it seems that they suffer from more hardships than other classes, the location of the film which is usually on a council estate or in a run-down area and regarding target audience, it is mostly a younger audience that the film makers aim to attract. This is done by the characters in the film being young themselves so that the target audience can relate to them. All of these conventions were found in Precious as this was the actress’s first main role, her family were lower class, she lived in the ghetto of Harlem and was aged 16.

Being illiterate, Precious was limited in her way of speaking until she joined a new teaching programme. Not being well-spoken is often a stereotype associated with people growing up in less economically developed areas such as the Harlem. Often her facial expressions and body language show that she is hurting inside and this is because of the constant look of upset on her face and in her eyes. Her body language translates the idea that she is keeping a dark secret as she often stands hunched with her arms by her side which resembles being scared to open up.

The way Precious behaves is stereotypical of her social class and this is because she’s shown to behave in a negative way such as being aggressive towards a student in her maths lesson and stealing food from a chicken shop. Her family also pretend to live with Precious’s first child so that they can receive money from the welfare which implies that lower class families are lazy and cannot support themselves without money from the government.

The costumes that she wears are extremely casual and build on the idea of her being lower class as it doesn’t seem that she owns any expensive items or is able to buy new clothes regularly. Her hair and make-up is done in a way that gives off the impression that she doesn’t care about her appearance and this makes her come across as rough, making her look like a representative of her poor surroundings.

The way in which class has been represented is quite negative and this is because of the costumes, behaviour, facial expressions and body language of the characters. Lower class citizens have been made to look aggressive and uneducated which is an unfortunate representation of them as they are not all like this.

Sound, cinematography, editing and mise en scene are somewhat typical of the genre as they all contribute towards creating the scenes in a way that expresses their meaning. Non diegetic voiceovers are used continuously throughout the film and are spoken by Precious. The first voiceover is used at the beginning of the film where Precious introduces herself and sets the scene “My name’s Claireece Precious Jones, I wish I had a light skinned boyfriend with real nice hair” She then goes on to explain what she wants achieve in life and this includes being on the cover of a magazine and being in music videos. The use of the main character voiceover is to allow the audience to connect with the character on a personal level. It creates a sense of realness as her inner thoughts are shared.

The majority of editing consists of straight cuts to enforce continuity and this is typical of social realism as it’s important for an authentic look to be expressed. Match cuts are also used to show the transition between key moments in the film. The first match cut was used when Precious’s mother threw a book at her and as she fell it cut to her falling onto her bed where her father sexually abused her. The use of a match cut here was to show that both of her parents are as bad as each other. Another example is where Precious imagined being famous and it began to rain, then cut to reality where her mum was pouring water on her face to wake her out of consciousness.

Resources For Mise-en-scene

Resources for Mise-en-scene

The Locations:

We are planning to film at:

· College: We are going to film at college because we have shots of the girls getting ready for school and also them sitting in school and watching everyone around them.

· Angelika House: In her house we will be filming the girls getting ready to go school and also them

· A Road: On the road we will be filming when the girls run of the house and run into each other after running away from their problems.

The only problem connected with using as college as a location, is the background noise of everyone around college, and talking while we are filming. But we will film in the quietest place in college.

Also another problem would be when we are filming on the street and again the background noises of the cars going past and people walking up and down the road.

Props:

· Cake: We are going to uses a cake because the girl is bulimic and this relates to our film because she will stuff her face with the cake and be sick after eating showing that she has an eating disorder.

· Drugs: We will use drugs because of the other girl in the film takes drugs, so instead of using real drugs we will uses fake tablets and other substances.

· Mirror: We will use a mirror for when the bulimic girl realises that she has a problem and she needs to stop.

· Bed: We will use the bed for the shot of the film when the drug girl wakes up in her bedroom.

Costume, Hair, Make-up:

· Costume: Both girls will be in casual clothing 'Jeans, Leggings, Shoes, Trainers or Boots' because they'll be getting ready to go to college.

· Hair: Both girls will have their hair done naturally either down or up.

· Drug girl, would wear make-up black mascara, foundation and black eyeliner. But the bulimic girl will not have any make-up on will be natural/cleared faced.

Lighting:

While in Angelika house we will use lighting but manipulated by uses of blinds and curtains and corner/bedroom lamps.

Outside and in college we use natural lighting from the sun and celling lighting.

Description of narrative structure and use of film language

In this section, you need to describe the style of your sequence.

You should cover:

§ Structure/form – the sequence of events (linear or non-linear narrative)

The structure of this film varies to others as there is no set equilibrium and the film does not begin with a state of normality. Instead it starts with the bulimic girl vomiting which shows that our film breaks the typical conventions of film and the social drama genre is highlighted at the first instance.

§ Mise-en-scene (setting/location, props, lighting, costume etc…)

There are a number of settings in which the film takes place. These include within a house (bedroom, bathroom and kitchen), college (canteen) and outside. The house scenes will be shot at Angelika’s house so that the film gives off a more realistic impression rather than to film somewhere where all these facilities are unavailable. The college scene will also be shot in a real setting inside Monoux College to maintain the realistic impression.

Some of the props that will be used during the production of the film are costumes which will be necessary when the main characters are getting ready for college in the morning and also throughout the day. Costumes will be kept casual. Make-up is also a requirement as there is a scene where the girl who suffers from a drug addiction looks at her scars (that have been caused from injections) in the mirror and so will need to be created through the use of make-up as well as on her face to show that she has had a rough time. The bulimic girl finds a note on the fridge when she returns home from college and so a note is another prop that will be used during filming. The note is important because it’s a message from her parents that leads to disruption. She will then take out a cake from the fridge which is an important prop as it highlights the problem that she is suffering from which is bulimia and this will be implied by the way she eats the cake. It is essential that mirrors are present during filming because it is through them that both characters are able to see what they have done to themselves which causes them to run away from their problems. A mobile phone will be used at the beginning of the drug girls’ story as she sees a picture of her and her boyfriend saved on her phone which causes her to shed a tear. This is important because it brings to attention the reason why she is unhappy. As one of the girls is a drug addict, it is vital that they are shown during the film and so are also one of the props that will be used. They will be shown in the background at one point and will then be brought to attention at another point when she begins to take them.

A majority of the time, the lighting will be low-key and this is because a darker environment creates a more dramatic effect which is what he film requires. As the storyline for this film is very emotional it’s extremely important for that emotion to be felt by the audience whilst they are watching. This will be created in association with the characters facial expressions and body language which will give off a sad and lonely impression.

Positioning of the characters is another important factor which needs to be considered during filming because there are scenes where the characters are isolated so the way they are situated needs to portray what feelings are being felt.

§ Cinematography (shot types and camera movements)

Shot types and camera movements are vital in showing emotion from the characters. As there is a lack of dialogue it is important for the cinematography work to speak on behalf of them. A variety of shots and angles will be in motion so that particular moods are highlighted. Shots include long and medium shots as well as more important ones like close ups which will be used to highlight important moments within the film as well as point of view shots to put the audience in the characters shoes and show them what the characters are seeing. At the end of the film before the scene ends, there will be an arch shot (360 degrees) around both characters as they bump into each other and this shot in particular will have to be done in such an effective way as it is linked to the cliff hanger ending so will have to leave the audience in awe wondering what happens next as well as to highlight that the two different stories are connected.

· Sound (dialogue, voice-over, effects and/or soundtrack)

The type of sound used will mostly be off screen non-diegetic sound in the form of background music as there is not a lot of dialogue taking place in the sequence but when dialogue is used it will be verbal on screen diegetic sound as we will see where the sound is coming from (each character).

§ Editing (pace and style)

Straight cuts are the main edits that will be used, to show continuity between each scene but moments that vary are the transition between the first girl and the second girl meeting. This transition will be in the form of a rewind after the girls have bumped into each other and exchanged dialogue, the scene will then rewind to tell the other girls story so that the audience can understand how they both ended up in the same place at the same time. Fade cuts and jump cuts may also be used to show a change/passing in time instead of to show when nothing important is happening in the film. This is so that the action is kept on show at all times.

Working Title: Breaking Point

Medium: Film

Format: DV

Duration: 5minutes

Synopsis: Two teenage girls facing not ordinary issues in their day to day life. They lead similar life styles, go to the same college. Know but don’t acknowledge each other. It takes them losing all their strength to see how they can be a support for each other.
Purpose: The main purpose of our movie is to inform people of what type of issues people go through these days. We believe that it is important that we inform people about this to show them the sufferer’s point of view on the situation and so that others try to understand them and their behaviour. Also we would like to advice some people though this movie, mainly focusing on the family issues. We want to advice young people who will be thinking about starting a family about things that they should avoid because those can have huge impact on their children’s development.

Target audience: The target audience for our movie are people aged between 15 and 25 because those people would be most likely to relate to the characters’ issues and daily struggles as they might face them or know someone who does. Also because those people have more time to watch movies. Moreover we target at a lower social class as that involves college and university students and unemployed. This movie is also aimed at people who enjoy watching social drama. Although we aim at both genders, we have a greater aim at the female audience as they are more likely to enjoy social drama movies and are more likely to relate because the main characters are females.

Audience Feedback On Pitch

The audience were positive about out idea for the film. They said that it is a well thought about idea and that we have everything in the right place. However, there was a few nevative comments; audience reported that it is unclear for them that the girl is bulimic, because we do not know why she is being sick in the morning.
They also werent sure if the two stories showed are happening on the same day.
Lastly they advised us to work on the acting part of our film as we will be needing a lot of facial expressions and body language for the audience to recieve the right expression.

Pitch

1. Clear idea for a film
The film starts off with a young girl running to the toilet, she is being sick. At this point in time we do not know what is wrong with her. She starts getting ready for college; brushing her teeth, washing her face, putting on her clothes. She leaves to college. At college she sits alone at the bench. This is when we find out that this girl does not have friends. The next thing that happens is the girl going home. She starts calling out for her parents but she finds a note from them saying that they will be away for a while because they have gone to sort out something at work. This is when we find out that this girl does not have her parents to support her. The girl then opens the fridge and with a disappointed facial expression she takes out the cake and takes it up to her room. The next scene is her sitting alone crying eating the cake. Eventually she gets frustrated about being alone she wants to run away from her world so she runs out of the house. She then runs into another girl, they both freeze and look at each other. At this point the whole thing rewinds back to the beginning of the film.
This is where we are introduced to the other girl. The first shot is her waking up, looking at her phone. There is a picture of her and her boyfriend as the wallpaper; we see a tear drop on the phone screen. This girl also starts preparing for college. In her room we see drugs on the table. This is when we find out that she has a drug problem. She gets to college. At break she is alone; this is when we find out that she also is alone. In a background we see the first girl sitting on a bench alone. Similarly this girl also goes back after college, nobody is at home. She also doesn’t have anybody there for her. She turns on sad music, starts crying, starts consuming the drugs on her table. She looks up and sees a picture of her and her boyfriend, she spits out the drugs. At this point she also wants to run away from her reality because she knows she shouldn’t be doing what she’s doing now. She runs out of the house and runs into a girl. They freeze and look at each other. They only say one sentence “this needs to stop”. .

2. An idea for a poster to sell the movie
We came up with two ideas for our poster. The first idea of the poster is:
• Portrait orientation, the top of the poster contains of critical acclaims from newspapers and magazines. Underneath there is our title “Breaking Point”, below that we have a shot from the movie where the two girls look at each other; it’s a side view of them. Below that we have our tag like “It can only get worse before it gets better”. Under that we have the small print; name of the actors, directors, editors etc. And in the left bottom corner we have the certificate 15.

3. Target audience
The target audience for our movie are people aged between 15 and 25 because those people would be most likely to relate to the characters’ issues and daily struggles as they might face them or know someone who does.

4. Generic Profile
The genera of our film is social drama. It has typical conventions of a social drama through; the story line. In most social dramas we see that the person who has some sort of problems usually is lonely and doesn’t have a good relationship with parents. Some of the props that we use like drugs and phone are also typical of this social drama because they are used in everyday life for some people. Another contribution to the generic profile is the locations used. We mainly use college and the house. These are also locations visited by people every day and seem realistic to the genera. Also the music we are going to use is a sad combined with tension type of music.

5. Consideration of narrative theory (Todorov)
Our film goes against the Todorov’s equilibrium theory. Usually movies will start off with equilibrium then there would be a distribution and by the end a new equilibrium would be created. However there is no equilibrium in our movie, it starts off with a distribution which is the girl running to the bathroom to be sick. The new equilibrium is when the girl runs into the other girl at the end.

6. Key representation issues
Our film shows a negative representation of the gender, age and social class. As most of people do not have those types of issues in every day to day life. Most 17 year old females from a lower social class do not take drugs, do not suffer from bulimia and are not lonely.

7. Description of how the film will look and sound like
Camera: variety of shots will be used like point of view, worm’s eye view, long shot, medium shot, close up, extreme close up. Also there will be movements like tracking and hand held shots.
Editing: The editing of the film will be simple, consisting mostly of straight cuts. However we will also use some fades. We will also use an editing to rewind the film backwards. We will also use a light tint of blue to make the movie look more like a drama typical film.
Sound: We will be using variety of sounds like diegetic and non-diegetic sound, also diegetic on and off screen. We will have dialogues and background music. Also we will be using songs played on the radio.
